Granville Bantock’s Violin Sonata in C major, his third and final essay in this genre, is a remarkable work, employing as it does a wide range of instrumental colours within a highly expressive context and formal structures that complement admirably the characteristics of the material. From the long-arched lyricism of the opening movement, through the fleetingly nebulous shapes of the second (tellingly entitled ‘The Dryad’), to the exuberant energy of the Finale, this is a Sonata that speaks with a poetic and dramatic directness.

Although this Sonata has been presented in recital and recorded, performances hitherto have used a copy of Granville Bantock’s autograph manuscript which is held in a private collection and which, therefore, has been available only to a very few executants. EM Publishing is delighted to issue the first authoritative published version of this work, produced with the blessing of the Bantock family. The edition is prepared to the highest modern standards of scholarship and includes an appended set of Editorial Notes, which incorporates full details of the sources used and bibliographic references; a Summary Explanation of Editorial Policy; and an Editorial Commentary, in which each alteration to the composer’s autograph is explained and the reasons for the alteration given.

EM Publishing is the publishing arm of the internationally successful English Music Festival and sister arm to the groundbreaking and celebrated recording label EM Records.
